Grand Opening of Village of Micro Homes for Youth
Denise Burry and her leadership team at the Forward Paths Foundation had a dream of building a community of homes with which to house young people aging out of foster care. Knowing that this population often experiences homelessness, and also recognizing that their clients have unique needs, they envisioned a community of ten homes that would each house two people for up to three years. During this time the residents could obtain education, job skills and training, and anything else they needed to lead independent lives. The staff of Forward Paths and the residents themselves would serve as the support system most of their clients lacked. They wanted this community to be a beacon of hope not only for their youth, but for the community.
The First United Church of Eustis donated a beautiful, tree filled lot of over an acre; Forward Paths raised money. When HomeAid Orlando got involved Taylor Morrison and Ashton Woods signed on to build the houses, donating or discounting much labor and materials. Bank of America supplied a grant for outside enhancements, and Lake County Master Gardeners volunteers did the actual planting. What once was a dream is now a beautiful haven for young people who’ve had a rough start in life. There’s so much we can do when we work together!
